How to Measure and Use the Calculator

To get an accurate result, you will need to take a quick measurement of your wrist. Since wrists carry very little body fat, they are an excellent indicator of underlying bone thickness.

  • Biological Sex: Choose male or female. The baseline bone density and standard ratios differ naturally between sexes.
  • Height: Enter your current height. You can select either centimeters or inches.
  • Wrist Circumference: Wrap a flexible measuring tape just below your wrist bone (the side closest to your hand). Enter the measurement in centimeters or inches.

Understanding the Ratio Formula

This calculator determines your frame size using the standard medical "r value" formula. It simply divides your overall height by your wrist circumference.

For Females: A ratio higher than 11.0 indicates a small frame. A ratio between 10.1 and 11.0 indicates a medium frame. A ratio below 10.1 points to a large frame.

For Males: A ratio higher than 10.4 indicates a small frame. A ratio between 9.6 and 10.4 indicates a medium frame. A ratio below 9.6 indicates a large frame.

Is there another way to determine frame size?

Yes. Another accepted method is measuring elbow breadth. This involves extending your arm, bending your elbow to a 90-degree angle, and measuring the exact distance between the two prominent bones on either side of the elbow joint. However, measuring the wrist is much easier to do alone and requires less specialized equipment.
