Understanding the DICE Formula
The standard classic formula for DICE was designed to mirror the numerical scale of a traditional ERA. The calculation is: 3.00 + (13 * HR + 3 * (BB + HBP) - 2 * K) / Innings Pitched.
In this equation, giving up a home run is severely penalized mathematically (multiplied by thirteen), while walking or hitting a batter carries a moderate penalty (multiplied by three). Strikeouts reward the pitcher by subtracting points from the total (multiplied by two). A base constant of 3.00 is added at the end so the final number visually resembles a standard ERA.
If a pitcher has a DICE of 3.15 but an actual ERA of 4.50, it strongly indicates they have pitched very well but have been suffering from terrible defensive support or bad luck during the season.

Why is a 3.00 constant added to the formula?
Without adding the 3.00 constant, the final number would look completely unfamiliar to traditional baseball fans. Adding 3.00 aligns the final mathematical output with standard ERA numbers, meaning a 3.50 DICE is mathematically equivalent in value to a 3.50 ERA.
What happens if the innings pitched are zero?
If a relief pitcher faces batters but fails to record a single out, their Innings Pitched remains zero. Because dividing by zero creates a mathematical error, our calculator recognizes this flaw and safely displays an N/A result to prevent a broken output.
