- Line Drives & Pop-Ups: Enter any remaining balls hit into play. While not part of the strict ratio, entering this data allows the calculator to generate an accurate overall Ground Ball Percentage (GB%).
Understanding the Mathematical Formula
The standard GB/FB ratio is calculated by dividing total Ground Balls by total Fly Balls. The resulting decimal clearly indicates the pitcher's dominant style.
If a pitcher induces one hundred ground balls and allows fifty fly balls, their ratio is exactly 2.00. This is considered an elite ground ball rate. Any ratio above 1.0 means the pitcher induces more grounders than fly balls. Conversely, a ratio below 1.0 indicates a "fly-ball pitcher" who tends to pitch higher in the strike zone.
The calculator also determines the Ground Ball Percentage. It does this by dividing total ground balls by all balls put into play, including line drives and pop-ups. A percentage above forty five percent is generally considered very good for a starting pitcher.
