How the Percentile is Calculated
The National Testing Agency (NTA) does not rank students directly on their raw marks out of 300. Because the exam takes place across multiple days and shifts, some question papers are naturally harder than others. To ensure fairness, NTA uses a mathematical normalization process to calculate your percentile.
Your percentile represents the exact percentage of candidates who scored equal to or less than you in your specific session. For example, a 98.000 percentile means you scored better than 98 percent of all the students who took the exam.
How the Expected Rank is Calculated
Once your percentile is determined, calculating your expected All India Rank is a straightforward mathematical formula involving the total number of unique students who appeared for the exam across all shifts.
Expected Rank = ((100 - Your Percentile) / 100) × Total Candidates
If you score a 95 percentile and there are exactly 1400000 total candidates, your rank will be roughly 70000. Changing the total candidate count in the tool will instantly update your expected rank.
How to Use This Predictor

- Select the estimated difficulty level of your exam shift. In a Hard shift, students require fewer marks to achieve a high percentile. In an Easy shift, competition is tight, and you require much higher marks to reach the same percentile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the shift difficulty really matter?
Yes. The normalization process specifically accounts for difficulty. If you score 150 marks in a very difficult shift, your percentile might be 97.5. However, if you score that same 150 marks in a very easy shift, your percentile might drop down to 94.0. The calculator simulates this shift impact perfectly.
What is a good percentile for NITs and IIITs?
Generally, for General category students, a percentile above 96.0 is required to secure admission into a reputable NIT or IIIT. To get top branches like Computer Science in top-tier NITs, a percentile above 99.0 is usually required.
Is this rank my exact final rank?
No. This is a highly accurate estimation based on previous years' mark-vs-percentile data. The actual final rank depends entirely on the official NTA normalization formula and the exact decimal values of all students appearing that year.
