A Lean Body Mass (LBM) Calculator helps you figure out exactly how much of your total body weight is made up of lean tissue. Your total body weight includes fat, muscle, bone, organs, and water. Lean body mass is everything in your body minus the fat.

How Lean Body Mass is Calculated

This tool uses the highly accurate Boer Formula. The formula calculates your lean mass based on your height, total weight, and biological sex. Men and women hold fat differently, which is why the formulas are slightly different for each.

For Men: LBM = (0.407 * Weight in kg) + (0.267 * Height in cm) - 19.2

For Women: LBM = (0.252 * Weight in kg) + (0.473 * Height in cm) - 48.3

Once your lean body mass is calculated, the tool subtracts it from your total weight to determine your approximate body fat mass and body fat percentage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Lean Body Mass important?

Knowing your lean body mass is crucial for tracking real fitness progress. If you are losing weight, you want to make sure you are losing fat, not muscle. Tracking your LBM ensures your diet and exercise routines are actually helping you retain your healthy muscle tissue.

Does Lean Body Mass include bones and organs?

Yes. Lean body mass is not just muscle. It includes the weight of your internal organs, your bones, your skin, body water, and muscle tissue. Essentially, it is the total weight of your entire body if you had exactly zero percent body fat.

How can I increase my Lean Body Mass?

The most effective way to increase your lean body mass is through resistance training and weightlifting. Lifting heavy weights forces your muscle fibers to adapt and grow. Eating a diet high in protein is also required to provide your body with the building blocks needed to create new lean tissue.
