CSV excludes coordinates by default. Turning location ON adds coordinates to the export. Reset removes this trip from tool memory.

Last 60 valid speed readingsPoints are spaced by reading order, not elapsed time. Pauses, rejected segments and long reading gaps break the line. The graph refreshes up to once per second; speed readings update when a fix arrives.

Safety first: set up the tool while stationary. Do not look at or operate your phone while driving or cycling. Browser readings are estimates, not a replacement for your vehicle speedometer or a certified measurement device.
Live GPS Speedometer Online — Free Speed Meter in km/h and mph
Use this free GPS speedometer online to check your current travel speed, estimated distance and trip statistics in a compatible mobile browser. The live speed meter supports km/h, mph, knots and metres per second, with a smooth dial and a recent speed graph. No app installation or account is needed. Readings depend on the location data your device provides; a browser cannot turn a weak location signal into a precise speed measurement.
How to use the online speedometer
- Open the published HTTPS page, switch on your device location setting and choose km/h or mph.
- Tap Start tracking while stationary, allow location access and wait for fresh readings in an open area.
- Keep the page visible. Review the GPS speed tracker only when safely stopped, or let a passenger check it.
- Pause to preserve your session, export the readings if needed, or Reset trip to clear the measurements.
Mobile speedometer and GPS accuracy
For a useful mobile speedometer reading, start with a good location fix. Outdoor use with a clear view of the sky can help on GPS-capable phones, while tunnels, indoor spaces and dense buildings may cause missing or drifting positions. Strict, Balanced and Relaxed filters control the maximum accepted position uncertainty. A smaller accuracy number is generally better, but it is not a speed error margin or proof that satellite GPS is being used.
Know what the numbers mean
Maximum speed is the highest accepted speed reading. Average speed divides estimated distance by valid tracked time, including stationary intervals with a known speed. Moving time counts valid intervals above 0.5 m/s. Pauses, missing readings and rejected fixes are excluded, so tracked time is not the full wall-clock journey duration.
Walking speed meter and cycling speed tracker
This walking speed meter and cycling speed tracker prefers device-reported speed. When that value is missing, it retains a position anchor for up to 20 seconds so gradual movement can become distinguishable from location uncertainty. A position estimate is the average over that movement window, not instantaneous speed. Uncertain motion remains unavailable instead of becoming a false zero. Tight turns and weak fixes can still make distance estimates too low.
GPS trip meter and distance estimate
The GPS trip meter integrates consecutive accepted device-speed readings for distance, or adds non-overlapping straight-line position windows when estimating speed. It does not connect paused or rejected segments. Maximum speed uses accepted raw measurements, not needle animation. A suspicious sudden change needs another consistent reading before acceptance; that can suppress glitches but may also delay a genuine rapid change. CSV exports distinguish device speed from position estimates.
Choose the Right Speed Display for Your Journey
Online car speedometer for passengers
A passenger can use this online car speedometer as a secondary journey indicator. The km/h and mph speed meter options convert the same measurement without restarting the trip. The driver should rely on the vehicle's instruments and road signs, not a phone display. This tool does not detect the road's speed limit.
Live speed tracker without an app
The browser speedometer is convenient when you want a short visible-page session without installing an app. Choose knots for nautical units or m/s for a metric speed reading. It is not a navigation instrument, a certified boat speedometer or a background route recorder. Screen locking or leaving the tab pauses this tool.
For comparison, 10 m/s equals 36 km/h or approximately 22.37 mph. Changing units changes only the display and export speed column, not the measured movement. Compare readings only under similar signal conditions; a desktop's network-based location and a phone's outdoor location can behave very differently.
GPS Speedometer Questions
Why is the live GPS speed meter showing two dashes?
There may be no fresh accepted speed yet. Allow location access, check your device location setting and wait for another position. If the device does not report speed, the position-based method needs clear movement beyond its uncertainty allowance. The tool hides a speed after 5 seconds without another speed measurement. It cannot reliably tell the difference between standing still and uncertain slow movement from positions alone.
Is the online GPS speedometer accurate?
Accuracy depends on your device, location signal and update frequency. Device-reported speed is preferred; a position estimate is clearly labelled with its averaging window. The animated needle does not modify logged speed, distance or maximum. Filters reduce some jumps and single-reading spikes but cannot guarantee exact results. Compare only while safely stopped or with a passenger monitoring both instruments.
Does it run with my screen locked?
No background tracking is promised. This tool pauses when the page becomes hidden or you leave it. Mobile browsers may also suspend pages or location updates. Return to the visible page and tap Resume tracking to continue; paused movement is not added to the trip.
Can I use it without installing an app?
Yes, in a compatible browser with location permission on a secure published page. A phone with accurate location support is usually more suitable than a desktop. Local previews, embedded frames and browser restrictions may prevent location access. Read about browser location permission and secure-page requirements.
Why does GPS show movement while I am stationary?
Location estimates can drift. This tool rejects positions beyond your chosen accuracy limit and filters uncertain position-only movement, but a reported device speed may still fluctuate. Accuracy is a position uncertainty measure in metres, not a speed error margin. Never treat the readings as a guaranteed exact measurement.
Will changing the unit reset my trip?
No. Unit changes only convert the display and CSV speed columns. Your distance, maximum speed and tracked time stay intact. Changing the accuracy filter starts a new position baseline without joining the previous and next points.
Is this a speed-limit alarm?
No. The dial range controls only the visual scale; it does not know the legal limit on your road. Above-range speed remains visible as a number, while the needle stops at the end of the dial. Follow road signs and local traffic rules.
