A Relative Fat Mass (RFM) Calculator is an advanced health assessment tool designed to estimate a person's total body fat percentage. Medical studies have shown that RFM provides a more accurate reflection of whole-body fat compared to the traditional Body Mass Index (BMI), which only uses weight and height.

How is Relative Fat Mass Calculated?

The RFM formula relies entirely on biological sex, height, and waist circumference. It does not require your body weight. Because it focuses on the waistline, it acts as an excellent indicator of visceral fat (belly fat), which is strongly linked to heart disease and metabolic issues.

Formula for Men: 64 - (20 × (Height / Waist Circumference))

Formula for Women: 76 - (20 × (Height / Waist Circumference))

Note that both height and waist measurements must be recorded using the exact same measurement unit, whether you prefer centimeters or inches.

How to Use This Health Tool

  • Select your Biological Sex from the dropdown menu, as male and female bodies store fat differently.
  • Choose your preferred Measurement System (Centimeters or Inches).
  • Enter your exact Height.
  • Enter your exact Waist Circumference. Measure your waist horizontally just above the top of your hip bones, keeping the tape comfortably snug.
  • Review your estimated body fat percentage on the dashboard instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is RFM considered better than BMI?

BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. A highly muscular athlete might be classified as "obese" according to BMI. RFM, by using the waist circumference, specifically targets central fat distribution, making it a much more reliable indicator of obesity and actual health risk.

What are healthy RFM ranges?

Healthy body fat ranges differ significantly between men and women. For adult men, an RFM between 8 percent and 20 percent is generally considered healthy. For adult women, a healthy RFM typically falls between 20 percent and 32 percent. Values above these ranges increase the risk of obesity-related conditions.

How do I measure my waist correctly for RFM?

To get an accurate result, stand straight and wrap a flexible measuring tape around your bare abdomen, directly over your belly button or just above your hip bones. Ensure the tape is perfectly horizontal all the way around. Breathe out normally, and check the measurement without pulling the tape too tight.
