WHOIS vs RDAP: What Is the Difference?

Traditional WHOIS uses a text-based protocol and results can vary greatly between providers. RDAP returns structured JSON over secure HTTPS, supports internationalisation and can provide clearer access controls. The familiar phrase WHOIS checker is still commonly used, but modern browser-based tools normally retrieve the public record through RDAP.

Understanding Domain WHOIS Results

Registrar identifies the company managing the registration. Registration date is when the record was created, while expiry date is the current end of its registration term. Nameservers point to the DNS service used by the domain. Domain status values can indicate transfer, update or deletion restrictions. A signed DNSSEC delegation means cryptographic DNS information is published for the domain.

A missing creation date, owner name or contact does not necessarily mean the domain is unregistered. Privacy laws, registry policy, proxy services and access rules can cause personal data to be redacted or omitted. Different registries may also return different fields.

Can WHOIS Confirm Domain Availability?

A public record can show that a domain is registered, but a missing record or lookup error is not final proof that it is available to buy. A top-level domain may not support public RDAP, a registry may be temporarily unavailable, or the requested name may be reserved. Confirm availability with an accredited registrar before making a purchase decision.
